Turn your passion for health into a rewarding career

- 05 November 2014 @ 11h39

Although many people feel that their hobbies are completely separate from their careers, it really is possible to turn your passion into your full-time career if you approach it in the right way. It’s true that not all hobbies can be made into a profit-producing business, but for those with a passion for health and wellness, plenty of lucrative opportunities exist to turn what you love into what you do.

Benefits of marrying your career and your passion

When your passion is the basis of your career, you will have greater job satisfaction and real motivation to work hard each and every day. A career specifically focused on a health and wellness passion allows you to make a difference by helping others to improve their quality of lives. However, you must remember that all jobs have their more tedious side. Yet, if you have a strong passion for the field you work in, even the little boring tasks take on meaning.

Steps to turn your passion into your career

The following steps will help you turn your passion for health and wellness into a career:

1.    Discover your passion
When it comes to health and wellness, there are a variety of different options available. Are you passionate about child nutrition, or about helping people reach their weight loss goals in a safe and healthy way? Are you more focused on helping national athletes achieve their fitness goals? Once you have identified where your main passion lies, you are well on your way to turning your passion into your career.

2.    Research the industry
Make sure you know everything about this industry, and what area you would like to enter. How will you charge for your services, and what taxes will you be liable for? Would you prefer to join a practise, or consult from home? Would you offer your service to groups, or just to individuals? Who will you be competing with?

3.    Ask for advice
Advice can come from anyone in any industry who successfully turned their passion into their career. A good place to start would be at institutions such as the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) or Virgin Active, staffed by skilled health and wellness experts who are passionate about what they do.

4.    Decide on an action plan
How are you going to get from point A to point B? The best way to create a career plan of action is to write your ideas down. What is your passion? What is currently available in this area? Where do you see yourself in this industry? Then, it is time to make an informed and realistic career action plan.

Turning your passion into a career will not necessarily be easy, and it will take a lot of hard work. However, the important thing to remember is that, by following your love for health and wellness, you are not only helping yourself, but you will be helping others too.
